Nothing is New Under the Washington Sun

If you’re just waking up and wondering what has gotten into the current set of representatives we have in Washington, let me give you a little history lesson.

The following paragraph is an excerpt from the September, 1972 issue of ”Guns & Ammo” magazine. It was written in response to the efforts under way at that time to slowly make gun ownership illegal but it is as fresh as if it were written today:

Ours is supposed to be a government of, by and for the people. For whatever grounds, it is becoming increasingly more difficult for the American people to get authentic representation in the various levels of government. One big reason for this sad fact is that the large majority of citizens have allowed it to happen. Too many people are too deeply immersed in their own complicated everyday lives to be currently politically aware. As a result, far too many elected officials are encouraged to reign rather than represent. It is a condition commonly called, on the Federal level, “Potomac Fever.”

Folks, what we’re seeing now is just a major expansion of what until recently has been nibbles here and there at our real rights and freedoms. It has been focused on small interest groups, such as gun owners, but now it is being given legs in a final massive push to take this country over the edge where there will be little chance of return. It has finally infringed on the rights and freedoms of the majority of Americans and they are taking notice of it en masse.

Our “representatives” have a fever and it is time we enact our own form of “health care” to heal it.

Do you want our country back or do you want to turn it over to those who would take it and turn it into welfare state, one that can survive only by government programs but at the cost of your privacy and freedom? Then there is only one way to do it. Support, nominate and vote for representatives that will not compromise their responsibilities for the demands of the political powers that be and those behind them.

Find candidates that state, unequivocally, that they will do what it takes to repeal health care reform, no compromises, no patches, full and utter repeal. That’s a start.

Then follow through and make the effort to stay educated on what legislation government is pursuing. An educated, active, engaged electorate is what corrupt politicians fear the most because those are the ones that will not be fooled by obfuscation and will wield the sword to remove them.

Science fiction writer Larry Niven put it well in one of his novels:

“Giving up freedom for security is beginning to look naive”

Don’t be naive any longer.
